Description: A common and widespread hoverfly in the UK, very often being found near water, whether it be muddy puddles, ditches or the shallow margins of ponds and lakes; but it is also readily found away from water in any warm sunlight, either on flowers or just sunning itself on leaves. In flight April to November, abundant from June to August, probably peaking in July. There are two species, H. hybridus and H. trivittatus which appear superficially very similar to pendulus; but both are less common and it is most certainly more likely to be pedulus if you see a hoverfly with these markings. |
