Description: Not a difficult species to identify, as the yellow scutellum, the large band on tergite 2 and the two thin bands on tergites 3 and 4 all point decisively to Leucozona glaucia. Normally the coloured bands are yellow, but they can appear in the grey variation shown in this photograph. Occurring mostly in lowland districts, and usually found along woodland edges in abundant vegetation. As with many other insects, umbellifers such as Hogweed and Angelica are a magnet for this species. The larvae are voracious feeders on ground level aphids. On the wing from may to October, usually peaking in July and August. |
