Description: This is a large longhorn beetle with a very variable pattern of black and yellow markings, probably mimicking a wasp but totally harmless. The larvae develop in old, damp and decaying dead wood of broad-leaved trees including stumps and fallen branches, tunnelling deep into decaying heartwood. Adults are most often seen on hawthorn or umbel flowers in June. It is widespread and common in southern Britain, particularly along hedgerows. It frequently comes into gardens for nectar flowers where there are trees or hedges in the area. |
