IZebra Spider > Salticus scenicus
Description: 5 - 7mm with a variable pattern of black and white bands on the abdomen and legs. The head is square at the front, with two very large eyes in the centre, flanked by two smaller ones (see link to picture below).

Habits: This is one of the jumping spiders that stalk their prey and then leap on to it, pinning it down with their enlarged front legs. It is active by day and its large eyes enable it to pin-point the position of its victims very clearly, small flies being its main victims. Adult throughout the summer.

Habitat and range: Most common on or around buildings, especially on old walls and fences where it is well camouflaged amongst the lichens, but also found on rocks and tree trunks. Common throughout the UK.
