Queen Elizabeth II Type K Pillar Box 1936 - 1952 Royal Mail's Type K pillar boxes were a modern, cylindrical design that was introduced in 1980 but is no longer being installed. Designed by Tony Gibbs, they are known for their "cigar-shaped" look with a separate cap. However, their hinges proved to be a frequent problem, leading to production ending in 2001.
They are cylindrical and have a smooth, modernist appearance, designed to be the "pillar box of the future".
Distinguished by a slightly recessed aperture and a lack of a separate domed top, but they retain the angled notice plate and rotary collection dial.
The traditional cylindrical style pillar box was re-introduced in 1990.
